In 1972, he graduated from the Riga Red Banner Institute of Civil Aviation Engineers (RKIIGA). After graduation, he worked at the same institute in the positions of senior engineer, assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, professor of the department, head of the department, dean of the faculty, first vice-rector of the institute.

During his work at RKIIGA, he supervised 7 candidates of sciences and was a scientific consultant for three applicants who defended their doctoral dissertations. From 1987 to 1991, he was a member of doctoral dissertation councils at the Riga and Kiev Institutes of Civil Aviation Engineers, and also deputy chairman of the educational and methodological association in the specialty "Technical operation of transport radio equipment"

In 1993, he moved to work in Kaliningrad at the Baltic State Academy of the Fishing Fleet as vice-rector for research

• During his work at the BGA RF from 1993 to 2002, he opened a postgraduate program at the academy in nine scientific specialties and a doctoral program in specialty 05.12.04 "Radio engineering, including systems and devices for radio navigation, radar and television.
• He opened a dissertation council for the defense of candidate dissertations in specialty 05.12.17 "Radio engineering systems and devices" and was the chairman of this council.
• He was a member of dissertation councils in the following specialties: 08.05.00 "Economics and Management of the National Economy" and 13.00.08 "Theory and Methodology of Professional Education".
• From 1994 to 2002, he was a member of the scientific advisory council under the administration of the Kaliningrad region, took an active part in the formation and implementation of Regional programs for scientific and technical development of the Kaliningrad region.
• In 1997, he was elected a full member of the Russian Academy of Transport.
• Since 2002, he worked at the Baltic Institute of Economics and Finance as vice-rector for research.
• In 2010, he was the initiator of the creation of the scientific journal "Baltic Economic Journal", of which he is currently the editor-in-chief.
• Since 2013, Karlov A.M. has been working at the Kaliningrad State Technical University. He was the head of the Master's program, took an active part in the development of curricula for the training of Master's students in the following areas: 38.04.01 - Economics; 38.04.02 - Management; 38.04.03 - Personnel Management; 38.04.08 - Finance and Credit.

Karlov A.M. carried out teaching activities in the positions of professor of the Department of Finance, Money Circulation and Credit, head of the Department of Instrumental Methods in Economics and Management, professor of the Department of Economic Theory and Instrumental Methods. He developed educational and methodological support for the disciplines "Fundamentals of Financial Calculations" (Bachelor's degree), "Actuarial Calculations" and "Research Methods in Economics and Management" (Master's degree), "Methods of Scientific Research in Economics and Finance" (postgraduate study).

• A.M. Karlov is the author (co-author) of 200 scientific and educational-methodical works:

including 7 author's certificates and patents for inventions, 8 monographs, 3 textbooks, 17 teaching aids. During the period of work since 1993, he has prepared four candidates of sciences and was a scientific consultant for three applicants who defended doctoral dissertations.
